Back out into the world...

As I write this, it's been exactly one year, one month, and nine days since I last posted here on my blog.

A lot's happened in that time. Some of it good, some of it bad, and some of it ugly (I've spent a lot of time over the past year watching TV and movies, especially old flicks, so pardon me if these phrases and names slip into my blogging).

I'll run quickly through the latter two first -- the bad and the ugly -- so you can know where I've been, then talk about the good.

The bad

I had a little trouble with my writing and publishing, or more specifically someone decided my stories were suddenly offensive, so after letting me publish work for more than a year, allowing virtually everything I post to pass through their censor check, suddenly Amazon decided much of my work no longer conformed to their standards, so they banned most of it. No warning, no explanation, just banned most of it and warned me I could lost my account if I didn't shape up.

Some of you know I've struggled with clinical depression -- at times severe -- and that sent me into a tailspin. I unpublished all of my work, not only at Amazon, but everywhere. An overreaction, yes, but I tend to do that some times.

Then life grew worse -- someone I had thought of as a friend and mentor turned out not to be so much of either, taking advantage of my condition at the time, offering "help" then pulling it back, stringing me along...you know how life can be. So I had to cut ties, walk away, which is always painful.

That was followed by the loss of someone dear and close to me, a precious soul who had really become my mother in recent years -- she'd taken me in, offered me support, guidance, love, just like I was one of her kids. She was the most loving, strongest woman I've ever known, but after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis, she passed away earlier this year.

And not too long after that I nearly lost one of the other closest people to me in the whole world. She's not out of the woods yet, after a hospital stay and some extended outpatient treatment, she seems to be doing a little better.

The ugly

That was me, throughout these past few months. I mean my life, the way I was living, letting things get to me in ways that were unhealthy. Bad things happen to us all, it's really how we respond, how we overcome and build our lives in spite of the bad, that ultimately defines us and our lives.

Right?

It was pretty ugly, and I went for a long period of time without writing, without doing anything other than crawling out of bed, going to work, then coming back home. I ate a lot. Gained a lot of weight.

Like I said, it was pretty ugly. But that's changing some, and that leads us to the...

 The GOOD

I've thought a lot about the one loss I mentioned earlier, my "mom." If any of you know me, or have been reading my posts off and on over the past few years, you know I had a rough start in life, eventually striking out on my own when I was just 16.

Well, my "mom" had a hard life, too. An incredibly poor childhood, some times going without the very basics of life, especially food. Yet she continued on, married, had her own kids, raised them, helped raise her grandkids, all through some trying and difficult times. Yet she never lost the basic joy in her life, never sat down and said "it's too much." She told me, more than once, that when things got really bad, she just put her head down and plowed through it.

"What else can you do?" she often asked.

Well, some of us quit, or take an extended break from life, it seems. At least that's what I've done a few times, which is odd since I was so determined, when I was younger, to never do that, to never be like the ones I grew up with, to never quit. I was determined to make something of my life.

I suppose I've done better than most that I grew up with, I certainly have done more than most would have thought possible if they saw me growing up, but still, when I sit and think and look back, I lost my way somewhere, started focusing on the problems, the bad and the ugly, rather than just working hard and moving forward.

A couple of months ago I decided this was crazy -- if I want some things in life, if I want to be different or better than I am now, just do it. Put my head down and plow forward.

And that's what I've been doing. I've tried, slowly, to get my life back together, to start writing again, and getting away from home for more than just working, to get out and live a little bit again.

So far, so good.

Which brings me to this blog, and my writing career. I've thought about restarting my blog for most of those two months, I've thought about writing and publishing more, maybe finding some homes for my old work and writing new pieces as well.

With the publication to this blog, I'm officially starting that, getting back into the game. In coming weeks and months I'll have news of my writing, where it's being published, how you can get it, and all of that info.

I'll also, from time to time, share a little with you what's going on in my life.

As always, feel free to comment, to share here from your own life, your own writing, most anything you wish.

For now, this kind of catches you up on my life. As always, thanks so much for stopping by.

Kissing in elevators, working undercover and a desire for chocolate cake? Lacey Silks' Layers Peeled

Today we're featuring erotic and romance author Lacey Silks, who recently released LAYERS PEELED, Book 2 in the Layers Trilogy. Here's a little bit about the novel:

Tristan Cross is battling emotional demons from the past. He lives in a world where trust is earned, loyalties are tested, and love is impossible. That is, until he meets Allie Green. She’s the only woman who can help him find a kidnapped friend and to top it off, she captivates him. All he has to do now is persuade her to work for Cross Enterprises, his top investigations firm.

Allie Green is a rookie cop seeking revenge and she’s willing to sell her soul to get it. With an opportunity to use Tristan Cross's resources Allie calculates her time for payback. As vengeance boils her blood she can’t keep her mind off her new boss and Allie finds it difficult to keep her employment professional. With the mouth watering Tristan Cross distracting her, she struggles to prioritize an undercover job she’s been assigned and her hunger for revenge.

And when you’re ready to give up your life to save someone else, distractions can be fatal.
Note: This book is the first part of a Trilogy that is designed to be read in order. Tristan and Allie will get their happy ending but not until book 2. This book contains a cliff hanger ending you will not expect. A prequel to the series which can be read alone is Dazzled by Silver.

And now, let's check out this excerpt:

My feet pressed to the floor as the elevator lifted against gravity. Tristan turned, facing me. His sultry stare bore through my body, and I felt my back press against the mirrored wall.

It wasn’t supposed to be like this. He wasn’t supposed to hold power over me; no man ever had. I was a cop. A strong cop who wasn’t swayed by crying mothers, cute puppies, or gorgeous hunks speeding in their Ferraris, offering everything they owned and more. But I was also a woman – and to Tristan, my body responded of its own accord. I felt my breasts swell and I wished I’d worn a dress with a larger top: one that could hold the twins in better. Tristan didn’t seem to mind.

“So, what will two thousand dollars buy me, sweetheart?”

Even if we were playing, I had a feeling this was going to be one hell of an interview—one of the best ones I’d ever had.

“Whatever you want.” I wondered how far he’d go, and how far I’d allow him to go. I already knew what he wanted. My instincts were solid, especially the hormonal ones. My body had secretly ached for his touch since he’d walked into the auditorium. And that one deep kiss we’d shared in his car was like a teasing spoonful of chocolate cake. I craved chocolate cake; and not just a bite.

And before I could say another word, Tristan crushed his mouth to mine, possessing it like he owned me, spreading my lips apart with his needy tongue. The hint of scotch still lingered in his mouth. And at this moment, he did own me. Every. Single. Piece of me.

His grip on my wrists above my head would have normally enraged me. But tonight I wasn’t a cop, and his strong and demanding fingers wrapped around my hands like cuffs, burning me with a long-forgotten yearning.

The force of his lips devoured mine, his tongue exploring my mouth. The few moans that escaped me, Tristan swallowed. I had no room to breathe and found hardly enough strength to stand on my legs.

He let go of my mouth and trailed his lips along my jaw to my cheek and ear before lowering down my neck, pinning me against the wall. Oh, God, he felt so good against my body. Everything inside me twisted and tightened and released in unbearable pulses between my thighs. I breathed him in, the oak smell of his scotch imprinted in his skin and in his hair.

The elevator halted and Tristan jolted up as if he’d just realized what he’d done. He searched my eyes with his as if asking permission to go on. And for the first time tonight, doubt crept in. He leaned his forehead against mine.

“We can’t do this. I’m your employee,” I whispered into his mouth. But inside, I laughed at my own unconvincing words, feeling the heat between my legs penetrate my dampened panties.

The open elevator door chimed the second time.

“Your body says we can.” He cupped my engorged breasts, one in each hand, squeezing them in slow motion, feeling their full weight.

I held my breath, pushing my chest into his palms, filling them.

He looked straight into my eyes. “And you’re not hired until the morning.”

Blind Faith, A Tides Inn Erotic Trilogy now available

My first release of the year, BLIND FAITH, A Tides Inn Erotic Trilogy is now available, for just 99 cents.

The book is a collection of three stories that center around Pamela, a waitress at the exclusive Tides Inn resort, and her attraction to Brett McCoy, a frequent guest at the Inn. Pamela, who generally serves Brett (at his request) when he dines at the Inn, decides to make her desires known to him.

She wasn't prepared for his response. At first she's shocked, then confused, and finally she realized Brett, despite his confident demeanor, has issues of his own, and she wonders if he can ever experience love without control.

Here's an excerpt:

“I have requirements of you,” he whispered. “Requirements that necessitate me removing your blindfold.”
A charge ran through Pamela’s body, one of anticipation at seeing Brett, fully nude. He grabbed her arms, lifted her to her feet, then untied the blindfold, let it drop.
She looked at him – his legs were much like his upper body, slender yet muscular, and she wanted to feel those legs against her again.
He turned her around, facing away from him, and removed the gag. She worked her mouth open and shut several times.
“You must be hungry by now,” Brett said. “I know I am.”
That’s when Pamela noticed a plate of food on the desk in the corner. The plate held a handful of grapes, some slices of banana, a few pieces of chocolate broken off from a bar, crackers and cheese chunks.
“I had room service bring something up while I was waiting for you.” She felt him behind her again, his body pressed against hers. “As before, I wish for you to feed me.” Then he was gone. She turned to find him taking his place on a large chair in the corner of the room, opposite the desk which held the food.
She looked back to the food, then to him, and realized what he meant for her to do. She walked to the corner, bent over, took a piece of chocolate in her mouth, and then strolled across the room toward Brett, the chocolate protruding from her lips. She felt foolish in a way, vulnerable, naked and helpless with her hands bound behind her back, having to walk across the room in his manner, serving him. But she felt alive, as if she were finding some level of gratification she had never known.
Pamela reached Brett and stood, unsure how to proceed, then she straddled his lap, eased herself down onto his legs. Oh, I want you. Pamela wanted his hands on her, caressing, probing, playing.
She pulled the chocolate fully into her mouth, held it there while it melted, then slowly, teasingly she leaned over, pushing her chest forward, her breasts rubbing against his chest, and she saw desire and wanting in his eyes, and Pamela knew whatever he had planned, however long this feeding exercise was supposed to last, he was about to lose control again. Because of her. Despite being bound, and knowing that he could do absolutely anything to her, at that moment Pamela felt power, a raw sexual level of control over Brett, over his desires, his ability to focus.
She put her lips to his, opened her mouth and pushed the sticky, melted chocolate from her mouth into his, her saliva mixing with his, tongues entwined as he tried to take every piece of the chocolate she offered. Pamela felt herself grow dripping-wet, she even thought her heart may have skipped a beat when his hands began playing along her thighs. She pushed her tongue even deeper. He moaned, his hands moving to up to her hips.....

You can purchase BLIND FAITH for just 99 cents for your Kindle here, for your Nook here, or for any format here at Smashwords.

For a larger sample, you can get the first tale in the collection, PRIVATE DINING, for free here at Smashwords. (Soon it'll be available at other retailers for free as well).

HELPLESS is ready for download and reading!

I won't say I feel like I've given birth -- while I have never given birth I've seen that way too up close and personal -- so I know writing and publishing a book is nothing like bringing a child into the world. Still, I do feel like I'm putting a little piece of me out there, something I've written and edited and revised and rewritten.

And now it's out there.

HELPLESS, Book 2 of he Lethal Obsession Trilogy is on sale!

What's it about? Here's a peek:

Detective Angela Martin returns to pick up the pieces of her life – and track down a killer – in the darkly erotic thriller HELPLESS, the sequel to the acclaimed erotica suspense tale LETHAL OBSESSION.

In LETHAL OBSESSION, Angela found herself in the clutches of a BDSM master who knew exactly how to control her body and mind, to make her feel pleasure – mingled with a hint of pain and submission – in ways she had never imagined. Then women started turning up dead in her town of Moose Creek, N.C., bound and tortured in ways eerily similar to what Angela's mysterious master had done to her.

Despite the danger to her life and career, Angela couldn't stop herself – she kept going back to him, ostensibly to learn more about him as she investigated the deaths, but in truth because she craved his touch, his control. She belonged to him, body and soul, though her devotion had tragic consequences.

In HELPLESS, she is working through the guilt of having killed, the grief of having lost, trying to rebuild her life and career. She is driven to seek out darker, more dangerous sexual thrills, even when the bondage killer, or a copycat, returns to Moose Creek.

Her life is complicated when a writer from a national publication shows up in her town, determined to do a series of articles on the bondage killer, and her life. The writer turns out to be more than expected, and this time Angela finds herself fighting not only for her career and life, but maybe to save others as well.

*****

As you no doubt know, given the title, HELPLESS is a sequel to LETHAL OBSESSION. If you haven't read LETHAL OBSESSION, I think you can still read HELPLESS and come away feeling as if you've read a complete story. But the characters, and some of the story lines, will be so much richer if you check out LETHAL OBSESSION first. If you've already read it, then jump right in to HELPLESS.

To download HELPLESS from Amazon, go here.

And from Barnes and Noble for your Nook, go here.

Smashwords will be coming soon.

To get a copy of LETHAL OBSESSION for your Kindle, go here.

To download to your Nook, go here.

And from Smashwords, go right here.

BONUS: If you want to hear a super sensual audio version narrated by the talented Karen Kruper, you can get the audio copy and the e-book of LETHAL OBSESSION, both for just $4.98 total, right HERE.

I hope you enjoy my work, and thanks for stopping by.

Release Day: HOUND DOG, breaking up with characters, and working in your PJs

Today we're chatting with Deliza Rafferty, self-proclaimed smut-crack dealer and author of HOUND DOGVolume 4 of the Savannah Rossi Chronicles, which is being released TODAY -- March 8. In the midst of her busy release schedule, I'm honored she was able to spend a few minutes here.

SHANDRA: Your latest work, HOUND DOG: Volume 4 of the Savannah Rossi Chronicles is, if I’m correct, part of a larger work that’s really a collection of continuing short stories. Why did you choose to write in this method, rather than a so-called regular novel?

DELIZA: Honestly, it had been years and years since I'd attempted to write anything wordier than a song lyric, so 40,000+ words felt terribly daunting. I thought it would be a wise idea to start with short stories to get back into the swing of things. I didn't originally intend to have an entire series about one particular character, but after writing volume 1 ("Rock & Roll") I had such a girl crush on my heroine that I wasn't ready to give her up so fast. Also I do want to point out that while the Chronicles are Savannah's stories, I've taken great care to make sure each one is a stand alone so they don't necessarily have to be read in order.
SHANDRA: Has this presented any particular challenges unique to your chosen method to tell this story, or has it been easier than a conventional novel?

DELIZA: Well...originally I thought it would be easier, but now it feels like I've broken up with four men in the last six months and it's killing me! I also originally thought I'd be just pumping out meaningless little sex scenes about once or twice a month - easy peasy - but it turns out I'm not as shallow as I thought I was and I actually want to be really good at this. I don't want to be on the "bad erotica" reading list. As a reader myself, I need vivid characters as much as vivid description and story and I detest erotica in which the characters have no motivation for why they're getting it on (in my opinion, that's just porn). So I'm just writing what I would like to read and hopefully it will work for others, too. So to answer your question (finally), it turns out it's not easier than writing a conventional novel!

SHANDRA: Can you tell us a little about what moved you to write initially? How long have you been writing?

DELIZA: Some of my earliest memories in life are writing little stories and songs, so I guess I've always been a writer. I've got a whole mess of songs published and recorded, however this is the first time I've attempted to do anything with prose on a professional level.
SHANDRA: Specifically, what draws you to erotica and romance?

DELIZA: That is a really good question. I think that being a Scorpio has something to do with it, ha! It's just something that happened...I wrote dirty stories about my boyfriends from the time I had my first kiss, just for my own enjoyment, and I voraciously read romance novels all through college. I think I'm just fascinated by the power sex holds over people and our society. In my home growing up it was implied that sex was sinful, shameful, or at best dutiful, so I am also quite sure this is a very delayed rebellion of sorts.
SHANDRA: With the advent of 50 Shades of Gray, it seems erotica is more popular than ever. Do you think the genre is finally getting its due, or is it still spoken of in hushed whispers, away from “serious” fiction?

DELIZA: Well, I haven't yet read 50 Shades (I keep trying to make it past the first 20 pages...zzzzz), but I think it's interesting there's suddenly all this attention placed on erotica because of it, when Ann Rice (my personal author goddess) has been infusing erotica in her very mainstream work for years and years (even before her Sleeping Beauty trilogy). From the mixed reviews I've gotten from friends about 50 Shades, I'm not sure it's necessarily done erotica any favors as far as getting it consideration as serious literature, but I suppose you have to start somewhere. Hopefully it leads readers to seek out some of the beautiful, poetic erotic writing that exists out there.
SHANDRA: Okay, let’s try a few non-writing questions. Rapid-fire style, just reply with the first thing that comes to mine. Ready?

DELIZA: Sure!
SHANDRA: Favorite television show?

DELIZA: Oh, I suck at this already! I'm a tv junkie, there can't be just one. Top of the list currently have to be Dexter and Supernatural, though. X-Files, 24, Oz, Friends, Six Feet Under, Lost and Cheers are some all time faves.
SHANDRA: Favorite movie?

DELIZA: Again...impossible! E.T., original Star Wars trilogy, It's A Wonderful Life, In America (a beautiful indie film about Irish immigrants), Sling Blade, All About Eve, several Brat Pack movies, just about any wonderful old Hollywood musical, The Artist, Dirty Dancing...I know there are plenty of "important" movies I'm not thinking of, too...
SHANDRA: Favorite band (any sort of music)?

DELIZA: This one's easy: Heart. Hands down, forever. Ann Wilson is God.
SHANDRA: Favorite restaurant (can either be a specific restaurant, or a type of restaurant)?

DELIZA: I don't have any one favorite place but I love Italian and Greek food the best. But I'm an Italian girl so I don't play...it better be good Italian. There's also a lot to be said for a good mom & pop diner that serves breakfast 24-7.
SHANDRA: If you could vacation anywhere in the world, money is no object, where would it be?

DELIZAEurope...primarily Italy, France and Ireland.
SHANDRA: If you could have any job in the world, without regard to whether it would be enough to financially support you, what would it be?

DELIZA: Once I'd have said a recording artist. But after lots of time in the biz in many capacities, I'm burnt out and sick to death of the emphasis on appearances, particularly for women. So lately I've been thinking that spending my days in my pajamas, possibly unshowered, drinking coffee and writing stories would be absolutely dreamy.
SHANDRA: Okay, back to writing. I know you recently started a blog. What do you feature there, and what do you hope to accomplish with the blog?

DELIZA: I was told that if I'm gonna call myself a writer then I'd better have a blog, so I'm totally flying by the seat of my pants, admittedly. The address is www.dirtydramas.com (I spent hours on it so please everyone at least go look at it once! lol).

DELIZA: This week I started "Man Candy Mondays," where I'll feature some half-dressed hottie once a week. Mondays are hard, man...let's look at some hard men and make it better! I'll be hosting blog tours eventually (which I'm very excited about), I'll be reviewing, I'll be booking guest bloggers of all kinds (authors, artists, musicians, etc.) and of course posting my own blogs that will document my process as I'm writing. Above all I want it to be sexy, fun and generally positive and not too terribly serious or heavy. I am very aware that my audience consists primarily of sunshiny soccer moms who have a saucy side behind closed doors and if I had kids I'd probably be that, too. I'm just not all that dark and twisty, despite what I write. So I'm just going to be me and hope it resonates with people.

Anyone interested in doing a guest post or requesting a review can drop me an email at DelizaRafferty@aol.com. I'll read almost anything, though admittedly scifi isn't my favorite. That's not a hard no, though. If it's a great story with great characters, I'm all in.
SHANDRA: Tell us a little about what’s coming up next, either a work in progress or something you’re kicking around inside your mind?

DELIZA: Well I went and put in writing that I'm doing ten volumes of the Savannah Rossi Chronicles before I actually planned any of them out (dummy), so up next is Volume 5, which has no name or even a plot yet. The only thing I know for sure is that the title will be something musical (as are they all, because Savannah's a musician) and we will meet Savannah's life long best friend/bass player/co-writer Leif, who is discussed quite a bit in "Slow Jam" (Volume 2), but whom we barely meet. I'm very carefully weighing the options of having them become sexually involved, if he pines for her or if it's strictly platonic...their honorary sibling-hood is precious to them and I'm not sure I want to risk messing with it.
SHANDRA: Tell us where we can find HOUND DOG.

DELIZA: As of today it is available exclusively on Smashwords.com! You can go directly to http://www.smashwords.com/profile/view/delizarafferty or do a simple search on my name. Either will bring up my author page and all my available books, including HOUND DOG. Smashwords is awesome, as it offers download options for any e-reader you own.
SHANDRA: Anything else you’d like to say in closing?

DELIZA: Just that "Rock & Roll (Vol. 1 of the Savannah Rossi Chronicles)" is free, so people can get an idea of my writing style. Hopefully after that they'll want to continue on Savannah's journey with me. I'm having the best time bringing her strong, sexy, sassy self to life and I'm happy to share her with others!
SHANDRA: Thanks so much for stopping by, Deliza. It’s been fun getting to know you a bit, and I am hoping HOUND DOG reaches the top of the erotica lists!

DELIZA: This has been a really fun interview, Shandra. Thank you so much for having me! ♥

A little more about Deliza

Deliza Rafferty is a new erotic romance writer (spicier than traditional romance without hardcore BDSM -- always super hot!) located in Hollywood. She's written all sorts of stories and poems for personal enjoyment since she was a little girl, but has spent most of her career in the music business. She is venturing into sharing her musings publicly for the very first time and is excited that modern day technology allows her to do it at her leisure. Currently she is focused on writing her short story series, the "Savannah Rossi Chronicles."

Deliza means "gives pleasure" and Rafferty means "rich and prosperous." With a name like that, what else could she do? Like...legally?

*****

And now. what you've been waiting for -- a little about HOUND DOG

The "Savannah Rossi Chronicles" is a series of erotica/erotic romance short stories that pave the way to an eventual full-length novel. Each story is a stand-alone and follows the steamy adventures of sexy, independent, musically-gifted singer/songwriter Savannah Rossi, who is teetering on the verge of national success. This is no spoiled brat pop princess looking to be saved. Confident, driven, intelligent and unabashed in her sexuality, Savannah has created her own success and enjoys a vibrant sex life on her own terms with men of her choosing. Is it possible that any one man could tame such an independent free spirit? Who says she even needs to be tamed?

In "Hound Dog," Volume 4 of the series, Savannah lands a major studio gig singing for one of the music industry's hottest songwriter/producers. However, she is blindsided when she shows up to the job to find that the only man she ever gave her heart to -- the one who also demolished it several years prior -- is the sound engineer on the recording sessions. As painful memories are revisited, Savannah and Jax struggle to behave professionally in spite of the deep-seated hatred and intense desire they still hold for each other. Time does not necessarily heal all wounds -- and new ones can still be inflicted...
